The Improved Fish Aggregation Device, designed by Technostrat Corporation. is now in production with 200 units planned for installation in central Phillipines in the this year.

The Technostrat IFAD has been designed to overcome some of the disadvantages of traditional FADs.

  1. Difficult to transport or must be built in-situ.
  2. Juvenile fish attracted to the FAD are at risk of being taken by larger fish due to lack of protection.

The IFAD addresses this by being modularized and folding flat for transportation. It is anchored by an assembly of weight units which can be managed by two divers. The unit is 144 square feet.

The second issue is addressed by the IFAD’s  central column which provides a refuge for juvenile fish.
